Supermarket Sweep(ers)

Australian supermarkets Coles and Woolworths are using radio to do battle.

After expanding to DAB+ several years ago, Coles Radio - the chain’s in-store station - is run by NOVA Entertainment, and now beats every other digital-only station across the five metro markets.

Music is programmed by daypart, depending on the typical demographic of shoppers at that time, and adverts run for products available in-store.

Woolworths, Coles’ biggest rival, has teamed up with ARN to deliver a product with similar functionality.

They’ll have a number of services drawing from a range of genres, eras and artists with a special focus on new and established Australian artists.

The stations will be available on ARN’s iHeartRadio platform.

Working with digital audio advertising provider Adswizz, Woolworths Radio will allow suppliers to book ads through its media buying business Cartology.

Could we see Woolworths also obtaining DAB+ spectrum?
