Another BBC U-turn?

BBC Local Radio will retain local/regional late shows in an apparent U-turn on the decision to introduce a single network programme.

Obviously a huge relief for all concerned - and, fundamentally, this is the right decision for listeners.

Late night is a special time to be on-air and only the BBC can provide such distinctive public service broadcasting.

I’m aware the move was planned to cut costs - but my primary concern, more so than localness, was that any new show would alienate existing older audiences (in-line with the recent music policy shift).

Equally, I hope the retained regional output continues to focus on those who value the stations most, as opposed to a younger demographic which would be nothing more than wishful thinking.
